Groundworks work by C.E. Bricklaying & Construction

    Below Ground

    Groundworks

Groundworks are the starting point of every successful build. Our team includes experienced operators and skilled trades who understand the importance of accurate preparation and execution.

Groundworks in Devizes & across Wiltshire

Every quality build starts below ground. C.E. Bricklaying & Construction provides professional groundworks services across Devizes, Marlborough, Chippenham, Trowbridge, Melksham, and the wider Wiltshire and Bath areas. Our groundworks team handles foundations, drainage, sub-bases, and all below-ground preparation to ensure your project is built on solid, reliable footings.

We work to structural engineer specifications for all foundation work, whether it's strip foundations for a rear extension in Devizes, trench fill for a new-build home in Wiltshire, or pad foundations for steel-framed structures. Wiltshire's varied ground conditions, from chalk and clay to gravel, require experienced assessment, and our 12+ years in the local construction industry means we understand the challenges specific to this area.

Our team also manages drainage runs, soakaways, foul and surface water connections, service ducting, and complete site clearance, everything that needs to happen before the first brick is laid. Proper groundwork is non-negotiable for a quality build, and we ensure every project across Devizes and Wiltshire starts on the right foundation.

“The footings installed by the developer were not entirely straight. Court provided excellent advice as to how to correct the anomaly and proceeded to correct the error.”

Why groundworks decide the whole build

Every wall, floor and roof sits on what happens in the first week. If footings are out of line or level, every trade after that spends the job fixing it. Our setting out is done by the same team that builds the walls, so the foundations are right for the brickwork that follows.

We have also corrected other people's groundworks. One client found the footings installed by their developer were not straight; Courtney advised on how to correct the problem and then put it right.

Foundation trenches are inspected by building control before concrete goes in. Ground conditions vary across Wiltshire, so where the dig shows something unexpected we take engineer advice and adjust the design before building on it.

    Drainage, bases and site preparation

Drainage is part of every extension and most landscaping. We install foul and surface water runs, inspection chambers and soakaways, and connect into existing drainage to building regulations.

Concrete bases and substructure work cover everything from extension floors and garage slabs to the base for a garden room or outbuilding. On landscaping work the same thinking applies: a properly compacted sub-base under a patio or drive is what stops it sinking or rocking later.

    Our process

    How we lay foundations

    1. Marking out

We spray-mark the footprint on the ground so everyone can see exactly where the trenches go.

    2. Digging to depth

We dig the trenches to the depth building control wants. That depends on the soil, tree roots and drainage, and the inspector checks the trenches before any concrete goes in.

    3. Concrete footings

We pour the foundations with a concrete mix made for footings, up to the height the design needs, ready to build on.
