How high can I build a garden wall without planning permission?

Generally up to 2 metres, or 1 metre where the boundary adjoins a highway used by vehicles. Listed buildings and conservation areas in Devizes, Marlborough and Bath have extra restrictions, so check before building, we'll advise when we quote.

Why do garden walls crack or lean?

Almost always inadequate foundations, no movement joints, or missing piers and copings. We dig proper footings, pier at correct centres, and cap walls so water can't get into the top, that's what stops the classic leaning boundary wall.

Do you install fencing as well as walls?

Yes, close-board, feather-edge, panel and post-and-rail fencing, with concrete or timber posts set properly in concrete. We often combine a low brick plinth with timber above for a longer-lasting boundary.

Who owns the boundary wall?

Your title deeds usually show it. Where a wall sits on the line between two properties, the Party Wall Act may apply and your neighbour needs notice. We're used to working on shared boundaries and will point you in the right direction.

Can you rebuild an old wall using the original bricks?

Yes. We carefully take down the existing wall, clean and sort the original bricks, and rebuild in a lime mortar that suits them, so the wall keeps its character.

Most leaning or cracked garden walls fail for the same reasons: shallow foundations, no piers, no movement joints and no coping to keep water out of the top. We dig proper footings, build piers at the right spacing, and finish with copings and a damp-proof course so the wall stays dry and straight.

Retaining walls hold back soil and water, so they need drainage behind them and, where the height calls for it, an engineered design. We build them as structures, not decorative walls.
