Core Trade
C.E. Bricklaying & Construction provides professional bricklaying and building services across Devizes, Marlborough, Chippenham, Calne, Trowbridge, Melksham, and the wider Wiltshire and Bath areas. Led by Courtney Earl, a qualified bricklayer with over 12 years of hands-on trade experience, our team of nine full-time tradespeople delivers precision brickwork for domestic and commercial projects of all scales.
From single-storey rear extensions in Devizes to full new-build homes across Wiltshire, we manage every stage of the bricklaying process, from setting out and foundations through to the final course. All load-bearing work is carried out strictly to structural engineer specifications, and we work closely with our dedicated architect to ensure every project meets building regulations and planning requirements.
We take pride in clean lines, consistent joints, and brickwork that stands the test of time. Our experience spans traditional Wiltshire stone, modern facing bricks, engineering bricks, and reclaimed materials, allowing us to match existing properties seamlessly or create striking new builds. Whether it's a feature wall, garage build, or complex structural project across the Bath and Wiltshire region, the quality of our finish speaks for itself.
“They told me they would get someone to me Saturday morning at 9am. The team arrived early and cracked on! By 11am the job was complete to a high standard.”

Bricklaying & Building
Every bricklaying job starts with Courtney on site. We look at the existing building, the access, the ground and what you want to achieve, then put together a written, itemised quote so you can see where the money goes before anything is agreed.
On extensions and new builds our dedicated architect and structural engineer prepare the drawings and calculations, and we handle the building control notices. Because groundworks are done by our own team, the people who set out and dig the footings are the same people who build off them, so the walls start square, level and in the right place.
Above ground we build brick and block to the drawings: cavities, insulation, wall ties, lintels, cavity trays and weep vents all go in as specified and are inspected by building control at the right stages. You deal with one point of contact from the first course to the last, rather than chasing separate trades.
Bricklaying & Building
Wiltshire property is a real mix. Georgian and Victorian brick in Devizes and Marlborough, Bath stone further west, and modern facing brick on newer estates. An extension only looks right if the brick, the bond, the mortar colour and the joint profile all match what is already there, so we match each of them before a single brick is laid.
Older solid-walled buildings need lime mortar. Cement pointing is harder and less breathable than old brick and stone, so it traps moisture and pushes damage into the masonry. When we repoint or rebuild on period property we rake out properly and repoint in a suitable lime mix so the wall can keep drying out as it was designed to.
Where character matters most we reuse the original bricks. Cleaning and relaying reclaimed stock takes longer than ordering new, but it is the difference between a repair you can spot from the road and one that looks like it has always been there.
Our process
Nearly every extension we build has cavity walls, so it meets today's insulation standards.
The inside wall goes up first, which gives a clean face to fix insulation to.
Stainless wall ties tie the two walls together, every 450mm along the wall and every 225mm up the sides of window and door openings, where the wall needs more support.
We usually fit rigid foam insulation boards, clipped tight to the blockwork with the joints taped so there are no cold spots.
Finally we build the outside face in the chosen brick, matched to your house, keeping the cavity clean as we go.
